US Sanctions Cryptocurrency Addresses Tied to North Korean Cybercrime
The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned several cryptocurrency wallet addresses connected to North Korean cybercrime. Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange, admitted to facilitating transactions with sanctioned entities and failing to implement anti-money laundering measures, resulting in a $4.3 billion fine. Binance's involvement in transactions with North Korea drew particular attention. OFAC also sanctioned individuals and entities involved in financing North Korea's weapons development and cyber activities. The U.S. and South Korea are coordinating efforts to prevent North Korea from using illegal cryptocurrency transactions to fund its weapons programs.
