Partner Sinyoung Choi Highlights the Necessity of AI Risk Management

On August 13, Partner Sin-young Choi of Cha & Kwon Law Offices delivered a presentation titled “AI Risk Management: Not a Choice, but a Necessity.” The presentation examined evolving security threats arising from the spread of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and offered legal strategies for managing related risks. In particular, Choi referenced the recent “echo chamber” attack that followed the launch of GPT-5, emphasizing that AI-related security incidents—60% of which lead to data breaches, according to global reports—represent not just technical issues but also key compliance challenges.

Choi also cited a recent survey of CISOs at major Korean corporations, where 32.25% identified AI-based detection and response systems as the most critical emerging security technology. She stressed that AI security is no longer optional but a survival strategy for companies, pointing to Naver’s move to block AI web crawling as an example that securing and protecting data has become synonymous with corporate competitiveness.

Additionally, she reviewed case law indicating that corporations may be held liable for damages and compensation if they fail to fulfill their duty to ensure safety in the event of personal data breaches caused by AI system operations. Choi concluded that AI risk management should not be a passive response to avoid regulation but an active choice for building a better future, underscoring the legal profession’s role in balancing innovation and responsibility. The presentation drew strong interest in the industry for offering practical solutions to AI-era legal risk management and corporate strategy.
